Maxim Vengerov’s first concert at the Wigmore Hall in nearly two decades is to be recorded for Wigmore Hall Live. The violinist’s much-anticipated return to the London venue on April 5 follows a sabbatical from the violin in favour of conducting and teaching.

On the programme will be Handel’s Violin Sonata Op 1 No 13, Bach’s Solo Partita No 2, and Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata performed with pianist Itamar Golan - who accompanied Vengerov at his last Wigmore Hall visit in June 1994.

‘I first played at Wigmore Hall when I was 17 and it has remained one of my favourite venues,’ said the violinist. ‘It has a lovely acoustic and it is wonderful to be so close to the audience. I am very much looking forward to seeing how the recording turns out and am proud to do a live recording for the Hall and its prestigious CD label.’

Vengerov has enjoyed long recording partnerships with Teldec and EMI Classics. He was named Gramophone’s Young Artist of the Year in 1994 and Artist of the Year in 2002, and won the coveted Recording of the Year in 1995 for his performance of Shostakovich and Prokofiev violin concertos under Mstislav Rostropovich.
